Texas Medical Association President, David C. Fleeger, MD, spoke to the physician members of the Collin-Fannin County Medical Society (CFCMS) by reminding them that Texas legislation is just one piece of a healthy Texas, but that it’s a really BIG piece, and, when their TMA told the 2019 Texas legislature how it should fit into the full picture, Texas lawmakers, by-in-large, took TMA’s messaging to heart (no pun intended) and shaped their legislation to what physicians and patients actually need. Dr. Fleeger asked, rhetorically, “How did TMA do it?”…With a strong grassroots advocacy campaign. TMA, nearly 53,000 members strong, is tenacious in the fight for its physicians and their patients. And this strength in numbers led to key wins, and how TMA will continue to win. Dr. Fleeger described TMA’s legislative strategies; some unique health care challenges Texas physicians and their patients continue to face; a variety of specific actions TMA is taking to address legislative issues both on the state and federal levels; and, certain steps physicians and their patients can take to continue improving the health care system.
